A Funny On Me

We've had a couple of good days, not stress free, as I am trying to shop for lights for the house out of a million and one options. I'm finding that I'm a little more picky than I want to be. I have found fixture styles that I love, but hate the shade, then finishes that aren't quite what I want, or it's not available in Energy Star which is a priority. Anyway, I have narrowed things down and hope to order them today because today is the last day of the big sale at lightingcatalog.com!

My "funny on me" is that this last month I just have felt like we've been spending money hand over fist. We did do lots of traveling and school supply shopping so I knew our expenses were more than normal. But today I balanced my checkbook and found a deposit that I had subtracted instead of added. Whew! That was a stress reducer :)

Electrician is here today... I need to get those doors painted... Joel is waiting for some HVAC materials... We need to finish the stucco and Joel wants to finish the shower downstairs... Lots of directions to go! Hopefully we will get to the pool this afternoon becuase it is going to be HOT!

Stress!

Lest you think that we are sailing through the house building process with no stress, marital strife, or overwhelming decisions, I thought I should write and enlighten you! Part of the problem may be that I have only been home 4 days of the last two weeks, or maybe its the dirt and "stuff" piling up in our 700 sq ft trailer house. Maybe its the summer heat,or the over population of mice that think they should live in the trailer with us, or the fact that money is FLYING out of our pockets at olympic record pace... But we are stressed!! We got back from a wedding last night, I taught Sunday School today and Joel is playing a concert this afternoon. The busy pace should slow down considerably this week and I am thankful for that. The house budget is still intact, but we are past the easy decisions of where to put 2x4's and we are into the doors/faucets/lighting issues. Joel has an opinion, I have an opinion and most of the time they are miles apart. My big learning curve is to express my opinion. I am a give-in-and-stuff person. That is wrong!! That is not God's idea of marriage and I have to be willing to work through disagreements vs. ignoring them. I know the big picture of life is that God is molding me into the person I was created to be. I am thankful that He is using the experience of building a house (a fun thing!) to shape me and work off rough edges. Larry King was interviewing Billy Graham and Larry asked him if he'd attained perfection. Billy Graham said "No, as I get to know God more, I see myself as even more sinful now than ever before..." (or something similar to that). I think that is a very good way to put it!

Life Continues

This has been a good week, but nothing "earth shattering" to report. Joel finished the drain work and is now on to running the ducts. Our friend Ron stopped by last night and gave him some HVAC pointers. This is the one area that Joel has no experience in, but it is pretty straightforward and its great to have a professional friend to call when needed.

I spent the day pricing doors and looking on lights online. I also thought it would be a good idea to confirm that the sheetrock/insulation price estimates we got in March would still be good. That stuff has really gone up (like everything else) but our spring price is still doable by our local lumber yard. I have broken down the remaining amount on our draw down loan by everything we have yet to buy and then I am trying to further break it down by category so I know what my bugdet is on things like pendant lights, flush lights, chandeliers etc. Joel put me in charge of the budget and honestly, I didn't really pay a lot of attention to the framing stuff. I mean, it's not like you can leave a piece of OSB off of your roof. If you need it, you need it! Now though, we are into the budget areas that have a lot of variation, so I am trying to stay on top of things.

This afternoon we head down south for a wedding. Jon is the ring bearer and told me yesterday that "in the old days the ring bearer was a really important job, now they're afraid you'll lose it, (the ring) so someone else carries it..." :) I have to run the car in for an oil change, go to the bank, pack, plant a new tree I bought yesterday ($2.50 maple...we'll see how it does...) Life has been really hectic lately, but after this trip I think I get to stay home for awhile.

I should also mention that on Wednesday we went to the 4-H small animal show. Jayne won the senior showmanship trophy for our cat, but since she was the only one in her class, she is not bragging on herself. But still, good for her! :)

Kitchen Decisions

Hi all,

It has been a busy week! Last Friday I spent 3 hours at Menard's picking out my kitchen cabinets and counter top and then I ordered them so that big decision is DONE. I went to the Schrock website and put together a picture of the cupboards and the closest counter top I could find to match so you can get an idea. The walls are going to be a sage green. The floors will be light, but have a little red to them, the floor in this picture is maybe a little too red but it's close!

The house currently looks like a bowl of spaghetti. Wires are everywhere! The electrician didn't quite finish but is coming next Monday to complete the job. Joel is plumbing and really enjoys the work. I went downstairs to check up on him and discovered why he likes it... it's the fumes! (HaHa) He is almost done with the drain work and then will run water line.

High Hopes

For the next two weekends we will be gone. This weekend we go to Rapid City for the Hills Alive christian music festival, then the next weekend we are going to a wedding in McCook. That means that Joel's current "get a lot done on the weekends" work plan is going to be impossiblbe. We were a little discouraged about that but then comes today.... Joel finished up at the job he's at and the floor system for his next job won't be in until Thursday evening. That means a stretch of 3 days for him to work on our house! God is the master planner and can even schedule our house building :) We're glad for that because it seems that our plans are always extremely unpredictable!

The heat pump arrived today. Joel and Dave moved it downstairs by putting long, wide boards down each side of the stairs and then nailing 2x4's every 3 ft or so. That way they could slide it little by little and take out the "brake boards" as they went. It worked pretty slick!

Tomorrow I imagine Joel will finish up preparing for the wiring and boxes. The ducts are going to be in Tuesday evening and after all of that he will work on plumbing. I doubt we will be able to accomplish everything by the end of the month, but we have high hopes!!!!!

The last picture is just a fun one. Ben made himself a mustard sandwich. He put mustard on two pieces of whole grain bread, licked off the mustard and then threw away the bread because "he didn't like it..." AAAHHHH! He won't do that again :)

Thanks for checking up on us!

Wiring etc.

Here is a long overdue update! Thursday the electrician came and we answered many questions about where light fixtures will go, even where the Christmas tree will be ETC! They got some boxes put up, power into the house and some circuits, but Joel will finish putting up boxes and he also will cut the holes for the wires. The electrician plans to come back on Thursday to run wires.

I went to Norfolk yesterday and bought some more wire, more blue boxes and the ceiling fans. I bought the longest extension rod they had for the great room ceiling fan and it was too long. Do you think I would measure or ask, no, I just thought we have a high ceiling so I'll just get the longest one :) I also decided on my kitchen cupboards color and style so it was a good day.

Today we are celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Ainsworth E-Free church - we have a website ainsworthfree.org if you would like to check it out. Our former, founding pastor was there this morning and tonight we are having a picnic/party at the pool in town so another fun, busy day!

I will post pics of the door when it's done - so you will just have to wait and see!

Decisions Decisions

Red or Gold? I think I will paint my door exteriors on Friday. Leave a comment on vote on your favorite!

The Latest

The stucco has started to go up. I told Joel that at the rate he was going last night it will only take him a week or so to finish. (I thought that was the easy going, no pressure approach) He said "WHAT!?!?" I will have this done in a day :) So that seems to be going well. He did get up at 11:30 to go broom the cement. wish I could have gotten a picture of him out workin' in his jammies... :)

You might remember that the electrician is scheduled for tomorrow and yesterday Joel got a call from our friend Ron. He is going to bring up ductwork (and possibly the heat pump) on Friday! WOW - we are excited :) Those things will take us up to the insulation and sheet rock.

We are having a little marital dispute about the sheetrock. I want to start on that in the bedrooms as soon as the electrical and ductwork are done in them. Joel wants to wait until all the plumbing is done too before we start on the next phase... Hmmm, I have a feeling I will NOT get my way on this, but mudding sheetrock is something I can do so I just want to get started!! AND paint comes after sheetrock - wow. The plumbing is not going to be anything very complicated so I might just be suprised at how fast that goes.

Wild Whirlwind Weekend and Beyond

What a busy weekend! We went to my folks' on the 4th, had a big birthday on Saturday for Jon, then we had a wedding reception, softball game, picnic and fireworks yesterday. Another picnic tonight will finish out the party-ing for this week. We have a church picnic next weekend. It is amazing all the fun stuff we get to do now that we have more summer! (vs being tied into camp's schedule)

Joel is all ready to stucco under the siding - so long polka dots! Then he will move inside. We bought a couple of 1/2 price apple trees yesterday and a lttle shrub too. I am all for hitting those 50% off sales :) The electrician is scheduled to come on Thursday so we are glad about that. Joel called him this morning to see how his other projects were coming along, the first thing the electrician said when he heard Joel's voice was "Oh crap!" Poor guy had forgotten about us. Joel knows how that goes...it's hard to keep everything straight sometimes. We know that we are a small job on his list of big, time pressure jobs so all is well - we will take him when we can get him. I also checked up on our budget and so far, it looks like we will come under our projections. That is really good news!!

Workin' and Playin'

Joel is working the kids are playing! He cut and stained boards for around the basement windows and now he is up in the rafters doing something to "sturdy them up" so that they don't move and crack the sheetrock seams when it's up. There are just lots and lots of details in building a house! I'm glad he knows about them though... Jon says that all there is to building a house is putting up the walls and painting them... Too bad he's wrong on that one!

Talk to you later!

The Polka-Dot House

We liked this so much that I think we will just leave it :)

Joel worked all day on attaching the mesh to the lite-form. He also took the kids down to camp to go swimming AND finished caulking the windows. I talked to him on the phone on my way home from work and asked how his day went. He said that he hadn't gotten much done.... I thought it sounded like he did alot! He then told me that until the house is FINISHED, he won't feel like he's gotten enough done. Pray for Joel! :)
